At our recent Hot Stories business networking event at The Officers’ Mess Mantle Space, Chris Hornby delivered a message that was simple… but surprisingly overlooked.
When was the last time you updated your photo?
Not just any photo - a real, recent, recognisable one.
Chris brought attention to something many professionals don’t think about.
Profiles without photos.
Outdated images from years ago.
Or pictures that simply don’t reflect who you are today.
And yet, we expect people to recognise us when we walk into a room.
In networking, first impressions often happen before you even speak.
Your photo is part of that.
Chris shared how often he sees profiles - especially on platforms like LinkedIn - where people either have no image at all or one that hasn’t been updated in years.
It creates a disconnect.
People meet you in person… and don’t realise it’s you.
Or worse, they scroll past your profile because there’s nothing to connect with.
His message was clear:
Be visible.
Be recognisable.
Be current.
And it doesn’t stop at one profile.
Is your photo consistent across your platforms?
Is it on your email signature?
Does it reflect how you actually show up today?
Chris also reminded the room that photography isn’t just about headshots.
It’s about how your business is seen - by customers, by prospects, and by the people you want to connect with.

Hot Stories is where these practical, real-world insights are shared.
We run our business networking events every second Wednesday of the month in Cambridge at The Red Lion Cherry Hinton - creating a space where people can share their story, be understood, and build meaningful connections.
We’re very pleased that our April events were supported by our sponsor Cooper Barnes Automotive, with thanks to Neil Hamilton-Meikle for his continued support.
The event was organised by Gemini Web Media, with photography captured by Chris Hornby.
At Hot Stories, your story doesn’t stay in the room. Each speaker’s message is recorded and shared, allowing it to continue working long after the event.
If you’re ready to be seen, recognised, and remembered - don’t miss the next event.
