At our recent Hot Stories Networking event in Cambridge, we witnessed a story that touched every heart in the room. Scott Dwyer, a man who once worked in emergency response and now runs a consultancy business, shared the life-altering moment that changed his path forever—and how he turned unimaginable tragedy into purpose-driven action.
A Fall That Changed Everything
In September 2022, Scott was helping a friend renovate windows at a thatched roof cottage. What began as a kind gesture soon became a life-threatening accident. As he reached the gable end window, the scaffold tower collapsed, sending Scott crashing two and a half stories to the ground.
The injuries were extensive:
Fractured spine (L1)
Broken legs with complex pylon fractures
Snapped ankles
Shoulder broken in three places
Traumatic head injury
With his phone out of reach and only one arm functioning, Scott crawled into the kitchen to call for help. That 999 call summoned the heroic team at Magpas Air Ambulance, who brought clinical care directly to his home, stabilised his condition, and ultimately saved his life.
Redefining Recovery
Despite being told he’d never walk again, Scott chose not to accept defeat. Today, he's not only back on his feet with crutches for short distances, but he’s also pushing himself to achieve something extraordinary:
A 100-mile wheelchair challenge to raise funds for Magpas Air Ambulance—the very organisation that gave him a second chance.
As of Day 14, Scott has completed nearly 40 miles, all while raising awareness for trauma recovery, safety, and emergency support. His goal is to reach £10,000 by 31st May 2025, and his JustGiving page is live here:

Innovating for the Future
Scott isn’t stopping at fundraising. He’s currently developing a safety product designed to prevent similar scaffolding accidents globally—an innovation driven by firsthand experience and compassion. He also dreams of launching an aftercare trauma foundation to support others navigating recovery journeys.
