At our recent Hot Stories event in Duxford, we welcomed Philip Spalding, the founder of the Cambridge Online Learning Community, whose approach to AI and learning is grounded in clarity, humour and collaboration.
Philip began with a smile, introducing himself through the surname printed on his shirt - a light, memorable way of helping people remember who he is. He quickly reminded the room that, in business, being memorable is important.
But Philip’s message went far deeper.
A Career Built Across Many Worlds
Philip shared his background, beginning with his early work as an agricultural researcher. He collaborated with organisations such as Norse Hydro before shifting to teaching later in life.
For the past 25 years, he has run departments, solved crises and stepped into leadership roles during challenging times - particularly supporting colleagues experiencing burnout or mental health difficulties.
These experiences shaped his ability to:
• Lead with empathy • Build stability in uncertain environments • Create structure in chaotic situations • Support staff through emotional and professional challenges • Teach, mentor and guide diverse teams
Now, Philip brings those skills into the world of AI, online learning and business development.
A Hub of Innovation - The Epicentre Anniversary
Philip spoke proudly about a recent milestone:
The Epicentre at Haverhill celebrated its fifth anniversary, a moment shared with Philip’s own significant birthday.
The Epicentre is more than a workplace.
It is a space where innovators, founders, educators and specialists collaborate daily.
A place filled with ideas, energy and connection.
Philip spoke at the anniversary event as an AI expert, offering insights into how businesses can embrace emerging technology without feeling overwhelmed.
Why AI Matters for Today’s Businesses
Philip emphasised that AI is not replacing people - it is empowering them.
But only if we understand how to use it properly.
In his work at the Cambridge Online Learning Community, he helps business owners and professionals navigate:
• AI tools • Online learning platforms • Digital skills • Collaborative workflows • Practical applications of new technology • Ethical considerations • Innovation opportunities
Philip believes that the future of business will be shaped by the people who are willing to learn, adapt and think differently.
Community: The Foundation of Growth
While AI and digital transformation were core themes, Philip highlighted something more human:
community.
Working from home can be isolating.
Sharing space with others sparks conversations, creativity and new possibilities.
Networking, co-working and collaborative learning are essential for staying motivated and making progress - especially for small businesses.
The Cambridge Online Learning Community aims to bring people together so they can:
• Learn • Share skills • Support each other • Explore new tools • Stay ahead of emerging trends • Build meaningful connections
Philip’s work bridges expertise with community - a combination that strengthens everyone involved.
