At our recent Hot Stories event in Duxford, we heard a message that every car owner, every parent, and every driver needs to hear. Neil Hamilton-Meikle from Cooper Barnes Automotive delivered a talk that went straight to the heart of consumer rights, road safety and the importance of choosing quality over cost-cut corners.
Neil didn’t speak as a salesman.
He spoke as a specialist who sees, every day, the consequences of rushed and inadequate repairs driven by insurer targets.
And his message was clear:
When your car needs repairing, the choice is yours - not the insurer’s.
The Hidden Influence of Insurance Companies
Neil began with a truth many only discover when the worst happens: insurers cannot legally tell you where to repair your car.
Yet many try.
Drivers are now faced with a new checkbox during renewal - one that asks them to agree to pay an extra fee if they choose their own repair centre instead of the insurer’s “preferred” option.
Preferred does not mean better.
Preferred usually means cheaper.
Neil explained how insurers negotiate reduced labour rates with their network body shops, pushing down cost but also often pushing down standards. These repair centres work under strict time pressure, leaving technicians rushing to meet insurer-set targets.
The result?
Repairs that may not follow manufacturer guidelines or safety procedures.
And when the safety of your family is involved, shortcuts are never acceptable.
Why Manufacturer Approval Matters
Cooper Barnes Automotive is an approved repairer for 18 major manufacturers, including Toyota.
Manufacturer approval means:
• Correct equipment
• Correct repair procedures
• Correct materials
• Correct safety checks
• Correct training
It is the gold standard of vehicle repair.
Insurer-recommended centres may not have any manufacturer approval at all.
As Neil pointed out: if your car is a Toyota, your repairer should be Toyota-approved. Anything less is a compromise.
The Parachute Analogy Everyone Understood
Neil made his point with a simple question:
“Would you walk into a parachute shop and ask for the cheapest parachute?”
Of course not.
Your vehicle holds your children, your parents, your partner, your colleagues - the people you would do anything to protect.
Choosing a repair centre based on what is cheapest for an insurer makes no logical sense.
Repairs Should Not Be Rushed or Done ‘Cheaply’
Pressure-driven repair centres often cut down repair time by skipping key procedures.
Panels may not be aligned correctly.
Safety sensors may not be recalibrated.
Structural repairs might not follow proper weld patterns.
These shortcuts are invisible until something goes wrong.
Cooper Barnes Automotive does not operate that way.
Their priority is that the repair is done properly - even if insurers prefer a lower-cost alternative.
Your Car, Your Rights, Your Safety
The message Neil shared is something every driver should remember:
Your car.
Your repair.
Your choice.
Do not let insurers convince you otherwise.
Quality repairs save lives.
